How do I commission an oil portrait?

To commission an oil portrait, you begin by making an initial enquiry to discuss your ideas, the intended subject, and the scale of the painting. Alastair Brown will guide you through the process, advising on format, reference material, and whether the portrait will be painted from life or from photographs. Once details are agreed, the commission is formally scheduled.

Does Alastair Brown paint from life or from photographs?

Oil portrait commissions may be completed from live sittings or from photographic reference. Live sittings allow for direct observation and are ideal when circumstances permit. When working from photographs, great care is taken to interpret the reference through classical principles of drawing, light, and form, ensuring the finished oil portrait retains depth, warmth, and presence.

How long does a commissioned oil portrait take?

The timeframe for an oil portrait commission depends on the size and complexity of the painting, as well as existing commitments. Most commissioned oil portraits take several weeks to a few months to complete. Clients are advised of an estimated timeline at the outset of the process.

What size oil portraits are available?

Oil portrait commissions are available in a range of sizes, from small head studies to larger, more formal portraits. Alastair Brown is happy to advise on scale based on the subject, setting, and where the finished painting will be displayed.

What subjects can be commissioned?

Commissioned oil portraits may depict individuals, couples, families, or children. Portraits may also be created as commemorative works or personal heirlooms. Each portrait is approached with the same care and attention, regardless of subject.

How much does an oil portrait commission cost?

The cost of an oil portrait commission varies depending on size, number of sitters, and whether the portrait is painted from life or photographs. Detailed pricing is provided upon enquiry, and after the final design has been agreed upon a final price will be provided.

Can I commission my artwork with a frame?

For an additional cost, paintings can be commissioned with a custom made frame. Alastair offers a wide range of moulding options to suit each client's taste.

Are oil portrait commissions suitable as gifts?

A commissioned oil portrait makes a meaningful and lasting gift, particularly for significant occasions such as anniversaries, birthdays, or milestones. Because of the time involved, it is recommended to enquire well in advance when commissioning a portrait as a gift.

Will the painting last over time?

Oil on canvas is one of the most durable and time-tested painting mediums. With proper care, a commissioned oil portrait by Alastair Brown is intended to endure for generations, both as a work of art and as a personal family record.

How will my painting be packaged for shipping?

All paintings are shipped in a secure wooden crate, while drawings are shipped flat
